Announced by the Governor's office this morning:

At least five Republicans have expressed an interest in the elected post, which has been held by a Republican for 25 years. The possible candidates include Chuck Davis, the congresswoman's widower; James City County businessman Paul Jost; Gloucester Supervisor Teresa Altemus; Spotsylvania County political activist David Caprara; and the GOP's district chairman, James Bowden

Do we have a candidate yet?

Also of note:

Voters in the special election will use paper ballots, said Kaine's office, because voting machines won't be available immediately after the Nov. 6 General Assembly elections. And the time is needed to prepare the machines and train election workers for the February 2008 presidential primaries, the statement said.

Two more for that list... (FxbAmy - 10/23/2007 1:17:02 PM)
Del Rob Whitman announced this morning, and Dick Black has taken a rental in Fredericksburg with the intention of running as well....

Ditto, "Do we have a candidate yet?" (Dianne - 10/23/2007 1:41:32 PM)
All I could find when I googled were these:

Suzette Matthews of Fauquier County, the Democrats' 1st District chairman, did not return a call on Sunday. Virginian-Pilot

Few names have surfaced on the Democratic side, and 1st District Democratic Chairwoman Suzette Matthews said in an e-mail that she could not comment yet.  Free Lance Star

Anybody have an idea who might run as a Democrat?

The only actual name I've heard floated... (Johnny Longtorso - 10/23/2007 7:17:30 PM)
aside from Shawn Michael O'Donnell (God help us), is Phil Forgit, an Iraq vet who ran an unsuccessful campaign against Melanie Rapp in the now-open 96th House district in 2003.

Perhaps porno king Johnny Longtorso will run (JohnB - 10/23/2007 10:13:29 PM)
