Prince William County Politics

I can no longer stand by and watch and do nothing. I never usually write, but I feel ashamed of being a Republican in PWC. This is not the same party where I used to just go to the polls and vote for our Republican candidates. We have gone awry. We need to get back to our principals and try to be good Christians who show compassion for others.

Now, what some Republicans who are in office are doing is pitting one group against another because one group speaks Spanish. I find that as a Republican and a Christian, deplorable. It's not about illegal status at all, because I used to see this same thing when I lived in Chesterfield, long before this influx of illegal aliens. It's racism folks, nothing but. Don't come with your BS and say it's this and that when we all know what it is. Stop hiding and say it will go away. It won't.

These people are going to stay here. It's impossible to turn back 13-15 million people when this country left the front door open for them to come in. Heck you would have come here if you had the opportunity too. This is not 1940 NAZI Germany. This is America. Sure, businesses benefit, all businesses. Most of them seem to be hard working, pay Social Security, federal and state taxes and raise their families just like the rest of us. You don't like Spanish, get over it. The majority of the people who came to this country from the mid 19th century on spoke their native tongue (French, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Russian, etc) for at least a whole generation and into the next, while trying to learn English. They settled into different sections of this country and mixed their wonderful traditions with ours. This is what America is all about, diversity. Enjoy it, embrace it, it's wonderful. Don't let a few ruin it for all of us. Do the Christian thing. I guess these Republicans want to make a line in the sand and do battle. Where would you like us to go back to, 1960, 1860?

I know when I talk to other Republicans; I am not alone on this issue. I'm not sure what I will do on Election Day. I can't in good conscious vote Republican and let it continue with more of the same. The crowd that's in office now has to go. We made a mistake. We were blind in the path they were taking us. This time I believe I have to vote for the Democrats just to change things for awhile and hope we Republicans can get back on track in time for the next election.

Another recovering Republican. (Pain - 10/23/2007 3:15:33 PM)
Good for you.  I am one too.  Been voting democratic for the past 12+ years, and can't see myself going back any time soon, either.  Drag all your friends to the polls Nov 6 and vote OUT Corey Stewart.

I am half-Latino (jiacinto - 10/23/2007 6:39:41 PM)
but I honestly reject the "progressive" position on illegal immigration. That position seems to be:

1. They came here illegally.

2. Even though they came here illegally, they should be allowed to stay.

3. Even though they came here illegally, not only should they be allowed to stay, but they should suffer no consequence for coming here without the proper documents.

4. Even though they came here illegally, not only they should be allowed to stay without suffering legal consequences, they should also be allowed to qualify for welfare and in-state tuition at state universities.

5. The taxpayers should have no problem support them with their tax dollars.

6. Anyone who opposes this policy is automatically by default "racist".

I reject that argument. What galls me is the entitlement complex that many illegal immigrants and their apologists have. Ultimately I don't expect Prince William County's actions to stop illegal immigration because the Republicans are basically playing upon the racial insecurities of the voters, while quietly telling their supporters and donors from the construction community that they will look the other way once the election cycle is over.

I do hope, though, that they do verify the citizenship status of any and all criminal suspects. But I concede that race is part of the debate and that is why nothing really has been done.

My replies to your numbered statements. (Pain - 10/23/2007 7:51:32 PM)
My replies are in capital letters.  You seem to be using a lot of the convervation talking points, but my biggest problem with this issue is that it's being used as a political wedge issue for political reasons.  I don't think there's any other reason for it.  But, below is my reply to your statements:

1. They came here illegally.  YES THEY DID.

2. Even though they came here illegally, they should be allowed to stay.  NOT NECESSARILY.

3. Even though they came here illegally, not only should they be allowed to stay, but they should suffer no consequence for coming here without the proper documents.  WHO SAID THAT?

4. Even though they came here illegally, not only they should be allowed to stay without suffering legal consequences, they should also be allowed to qualify for welfare and in-state tuition at state universities.  UM, WHAT?

5. The taxpayers should have no problem support them with their tax dollars.  SAYS WHO?

6. Anyone who opposes this policy is automatically by default "racist".  OH, PLEASE!

Didn't we just have (Lowell - 10/23/2007 9:52:00 PM)
the exact same conversation the other day?  Time for new talking points, maybe?
