Shocking Endorsement in 68th House

I still don't believe it but The Richmond Times Dispatch endorsed the Independent, Waddell, over the republican, Loupassi.  I would have bet money the paper would have gone the other way.  Go Waddell !!
Although Del. Katherine Waddell's previous campaign was not a strong one, she has proven to be an accessible, prepared, and skillful legislator. She made replacement of the Huguenot Bridge a top priority, and has helped to move that process toward fruition. Also thanks to her efforts the Amber Alert system will expand to cover students such as Chip Ellis. When the young man's parents reported him missing in May 2006 police could not issue an Amber Alert: While Ellis was still in high school, he had passed his 18th birthday. A bill from Waddell helped to eliminate such anomalies. Her responsiveness and attention to constituents' concerns are welcome and refreshing. She has earned the support of the 68th House District for another term, and she has earned our endorsement as well.

I'm reading their endorsements now, and I have to say, their brush-offs of Joseph Morrissey and Don McEachin are offensive. At least they got a competitive race right.

RTD got this one right (chippenham - 10/21/2007 10:10:25 PM)
Earlier in the month, the RTD gave legislative candidates the opportunity to enter written answers to five questions.  Unfortunately, I can't find the link to the special page they set up, but they do have kind of a crappy link here:

If you read the answers, its clear that Waddell is the most serious and thoughtful of the candidates.  Loupassi, I think, is finally being exposed as kind of the nice guy but empty suit that he's always been.  This district, while it leans Republican, is very much a toss up district.  Loupassi, as likeable as he is, has not made the case for why Waddell should be replaced.  The Times Dispatch seems to acknowledge that in today's endorsement.

The Times They Are A Changin' (connie - 10/22/2007 9:59:49 AM)
This may not seem like a shocking endorsement to some, given that Waddell is a former Repub turned Independent, but those who know and admire Katherine Waddell know that this is a HUGE shock.  While she'd never call herself a de facto Democrat to get elected, everyone knows that she is thoughtful, articulate and progressive, and for the RTD to endorse her is a huge step into the 21st Century for that publication.  Virginia is changing, and Richmond is changing, and if the RTD wants to keep its readership base in this brave new world it's about time they started looking at things more objectively and fairly.  This is a baby step in that direction, but still shocking...
