Tell Us What You Really Think, Tom!
Davis:  VA is One-Third Northern Virginia and the rest "Alabama"

(Audio)
Richmond- Calling downstate Virginia "Alabama," potential Republican Senate candidate Tom Davis made his views of the region crystal clear during a recent conservation with WTOP reporter Mark Plotkin.  According to Plotkin, Davis recently said that the Commonwealth is "one-third Northern Virginia and the rest Alabama."

"For someone considering a run at statewide office, Tom Davis is demonstrating either a stunning lack of knowledge of Virginia geography, or a stunning lack of respect for the people of the Commonwealth," said Democratic Party of Virginia Spokeswoman Danae Jones. "He may not believe that anything south of the Occoquan is part of Virginia, but we sure do. Virginians want a Senator who will represent ALL regions of the Commonwealth - not pit them against one another."

Listen to Plotkin relay the conversation on WTOP here.

You think the Davises are feeling a little bitter these days or what?!?

That sounds like our boy Tom. (pol - 10/15/2007 6:24:38 PM)

Will this end his Senate run? (True Blue - 10/15/2007 6:31:50 PM)
Or more likely, was this comment the result of the fact that the RPV's central committee ended it for him last Saturday?

Man. (Sui Juris - 10/15/2007 6:35:06 PM)
That sounds like something I'd say.

Not a good move, Tom.

Tom Davis (changeagent - 10/15/2007 7:14:17 PM)
I hate to pour water on this parade....however, what is wrong with referring to southern Virginias as being like Alabama folks?

I think Davis was praising the southern Virginias.....

Alabama (KCinDC - 10/15/2007 7:25:22 PM)
Well, we could do a survey of Virginians outside NoVa and see how many like being called Alabama. I'm betting the number wouldn't be high.

At least Davis didn't refer to Northern Virginia as "the real Virginia".

Yeah, why don't you try it? (Lowell - 10/15/2007 7:43:17 PM)
Go to Hampton Roads, the Richmond area, or SWVA and say they're just like Alabama.  See how that works out for ya! :)

The Stars Fell On Virginia (Sui Juris - 10/15/2007 7:44:49 PM)
just doesn't have the same ring, does it?

Anyway, I'm from Georgia.  We know how this works.  Georgia thanks god for Alabama.  And Alabama thanks god for Mississippi.  And Mississippi . . .well . . . sorry, y'all.

His wife is in even bigger trouble (legacyofmarshall - 10/15/2007 7:16:31 PM)
The September fundraising reports are hot off the press:

Chap: 177k raised, 90k spent, 115k in-kind

JMDD: 83k raised, 216k spent, 14k in-kind

Every figure there is shocking.  Yes, Chap raised TWICE as much as JMDD. Yes, Chap got 10 TIMES MORE in-kind than JMDD.  But what I just don't get is that this is the second period in a row now that JMDD has had out-of-control spending.  Yeah, she has a lot in the bank, but, what's there to spend it on?  More poodles for campaign photos?

Davis lashes out at pro-convention GOPers (Craig - 10/15/2007 7:25:21 PM)
I think that's where that comment came from.  Now that he realizes he won't get to be a Senator and that his wife might loose her state seat, I guess he doesn't feel the need to be polite.

Exactly and he's trying to save his seat (humanfont - 10/15/2007 7:43:20 PM)
He knows he won't get the senate nod; but would like to remain a congressman.  So he's trying to differentiate himself from the rest of the Republicans in VA.  He's taking left; unfortunatly it might work.

Choice Quotes (Evan M - 10/15/2007 7:48:12 PM)
So all we need to do is find some of the quotes he made while tacking right for the nomination over the past six months. :)

Should help Leslie some as the time comes.

Alrighty... (MikeSizemore - 10/15/2007 9:38:58 PM)
Born, raised, and educated in BEAUTIFUL Southwest, Virginia (Martinsville, Collinsville, and Blacksburg USA). Normally, I would not take that as an insult, having no sour feelings toward Alabama folks (they make great college football fans). In this case, however, I despise his arrogant and elitist tone.

Perhaps he's just angry at the fact a real Virginian like Chap Petersen has put into action the beginning of the end of the Davis machine.

Trying to save his seat (Mary I - 10/15/2007 11:48:43 PM)
I am not so sure Tom Davis has an interest in running again for his house seat. If I remember correctly, he had a mega dollar offer from private industry. He and John Warner talked about it and the buzz was Warner told him to hang in there as he was going to retire. The Senate has always been Tom's ambition.
The dollars he assumed he would have going against Gilmore disappeared rather quickly when Andy Hurst entered his life. The polls with respect to his running against Mark Warner don't lend themselves to major dollar contributions. For whatever reason, I don't think without the thought of the senate in his future Tom has much interest in continuing in politics and I really think that is the case whether JMDD wins or not. Could be the next Davis to enter the game will be his son who is currently in Law School.

At least we now know (Teddy - 10/16/2007 12:41:34 AM)
what Congressman Davis really thinks.  And to think he vigorously supported George Allen, who seems to have had exactly the opposite idea about Virginia.  Didn't Allen let us know he considered the Alabama part of Virginia to be the "real" Virginia, which meant Fairfax was, I suppose, the "fake" Virginia.  Such hypocrisy all around, my, my. Absolutely as delicious as grits 'n' gravy on a frosty mornin'.

OK, according to wikipedia.... (CommonSense - 10/16/2007 6:41:34 AM)
The first recorded incident in America was in 1766: Captain William Smith was tarred, feathered, and dumped into the harbor of Norfolk, Virginia, by a mob that included the town's Mayor. He was picked up by a vessel just as his strength was giving out. He survived, and was later quoted as saying that "?[they] dawbed my body and face all over with tar and afterwards threw feathers on me."
Retirement looking better and better? (snark)

Gawrsh... (Bwana - 10/17/2007 2:12:55 PM)
...that means that either Plotkin is a liar or Davis is a damnfool.

Either way I doubt Davis talks much to Plotkin in the next year or so...

Note that Davis hasn't denied it. (Lowell - 10/17/2007 2:15:03 PM)

Davis vexes me. (jsrutstein - 10/17/2007 2:28:57 PM)
The public record is replete with Tom Davis quotes that would have finished other politicians long ago.  I think the VA-11 electorate is just too damned educated to care.  In 20 days, we'll find out if he and his wife can no longer succeed by pandering to our vanity about not wanting to be represented by one of "those" Republicans.  I think Chap is a sufficiently worthy candidate that he can get votes from people who used to vote for Jeannemarie because for some reason (the way they were raised?) they just couldn't vote for a Democrat.
