New Poll: Warner Leads GOP Senate Candidates 2-to-1

Very good news for 2008:
Former Virginia governor Mark R. Warner holds a 30-point lead over his two potential Republican rivals in next year's U.S. Senate race, boosting Democrats' chances of expanding their congressional majority and highlighting the party's ascendancy in the state, according to a new Washington Post poll.

Warner, a Democrat who announced his candidacy last month, would get more than 60 percent of the vote in a hypothetical matchup against Rep. Thomas M. Davis III or former governor James S. Gilmore III, the two Republicans who have indicated they are considering running against him.

Considering we're still 13 months out, surprisingly few voters called themselves undecided. And even more bad news for Tommy Boy: "More than half of Virginians do not know enough about Davis to rate him favorably or unfavorably."

Gilmore Was Denying This Poll on WTOP Today (HisRoc - 10/12/2007 12:47:08 PM)
For those who couldn't tune in for Mark Plotkin's program today, you missed some classic revisionism by Jim Gilmore.  He bragged about his campaign promise for Governor "to reduce the car tax and we did."  I seem to remember a promise to eliminate the car tax and "No Car Tax" streamers appearing on Gilmore signs.  He also made nice noises about returning funding to the local governments and fiscal responsibility.  I guess no one told him about the budget disaster that Mark Warner inherited.  Best of all, he claimed that this poll is not representative of an informed electorate because, 1) the sample included unregistered voters, 2) he hasn't been actively campaigning of late (wasn't he running for POTUS?), and 3) when someone actually runs agains Mark Warner and gets into his record his approval rating will drop.  Hmmm...I didn't recall that Mark ran for Governor unopposed and that he had a friendly Democratic General Assembly to deal with.

Probably wishful thinking, but (David Campbell - 10/12/2007 3:34:31 PM)
Maybe Davis and Gilmore will duck the race and Warner will run unopposed.

You're going the wrong way (Ron1 - 10/12/2007 4:14:44 PM)
Personally, I want Congressmen Davis, Cantor, and Goodlatte and Lt. Gov. Bolling to all compete for the nomination, and then the good Guv to crush whomever wins the nomination, also leaving VA-11, VA-7, and VA-6 as open races.

I'm with you, Ron! Fantastic idea! LOL

Exactly, the more the merrier! (Lowell - 10/12/2007 4:20:47 PM)
Why not let the Republicans have a knock-down drag-out fight.  The rest of us can sit back and enjoy the popcorn! :)

Very Wishful Thinking... (HisRoc - 10/12/2007 5:47:51 PM)
Don't forget:  "Macca" Allen was running 30 points ahead of Jim Webb much closer than this to the 2006 election day.  And "Gimmick" Gilmore was way behind Lt. Gov. Don Beyer until he launched his "No Car Tax" campaign.  A lot can happen in the next 12 months and I wouldn't count any Republican in Virginia out.  After all, even after the Macca incident, Jim Webb was only able to win by 9,000 votes.
