Let Them Eat Cake?

Not exactly a flattering portrait of Corey Stewart in today's Washington Post...

Corey A. Stewart had just downed a plate of sausage goulash at Cafe Mozart, his favorite District hangout, when illegal immigration got in the way of dessert. The chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors was thinking German chocolate cake, but his waiter, Alex Kemsky, a bearish Ukrainian, was worried about a friend in Dale City.

"Will he lose his house?" asked Kemsky, explaining that the friend, an illegal immigrant from Honduras with two jobs, two children and a lot of home equity, was now cowering in fear of Prince William's new anti-illegal immigrant policies.

Stewart gave a reassuring laugh and said that, no, the man's house would not be taken away. Then he flipped into campaign mode, telling Kemsky that his friend was more likely to be deported.

But the man works hard and doesn't cause trouble, Kemsky said.

"I don't want to sound cruel, but people should obey the rules," Stewart said flatly. Then he ordered cake.

Let them eat cake, in other words?

P.S. Go Sharon Pandak!

I think people should follow the rules but (pol - 10/12/2007 4:44:49 PM)
legal immigrants with any skin other than lily white are going to be racially-profiled if the resolution is funded.  How are our law enforcement officials going to be able to tell the difference?  It is not fair that a person takes the time to come here legally, even attain their citizenship, then be treated as though they are criminals.

God help us if the PWC BOCS passes the legislation.

Well (jiacinto - 10/12/2007 6:50:09 PM)
I would support the police having the ability to verify citizenship only when a suspect is taken into custody.

Stewar is right (jiacinto - 10/12/2007 6:49:40 PM)
I disagree with the "progressive" position on illegal immigration, which seems to be:

1. The immigrants came here illegally.

2. Even though they came here illegally they should be allowed to stay.

3. Even though they came here illegally and they should be allowed to stay, they should also be able to qualify for in-state tuition at universities, welfare, and other social welfare programs.

4. US citizens should support these illegals with their taxpayer dollars.

5. And anyone who has a problem with this is automatically "a racist".

What bothers me is the self-entitlement complex that somehow illegals are entitled to stay in the US.

Here's Ted Kennedy's position on illegal immigration (Lowell - 10/12/2007 7:25:45 PM)
...significantly increase the civil penalties for hiring, recruiting, and referral violations. For the first violation, it would establish a minimum penalty of $5,000 for each unauthorized alien with respect to whom a violation occurred. For entities previously subject to cease and desist orders under this section, it would raise the minimum penalty to $5,000 and the maximum penalty to $10,000 for each offense. For entities previously subject to more than one such order, the minimum penalty would be raised to $25,000.

The civil penalty levels for paperwork violations would also be significantly increased. Paperwork offenses, including failure to use the new verification system, would be subject to a minimum $1,000 penalty and maximum $25,000 penalty. This section also would establish a scheme for mitigating the penalty structure by reducing the amounts in question based on the size of the employer.

This section would increase dramatically the criminal penalties for entities engaged in a pattern or practice of hiring and employing unauthorized workers. It would raise the maximum fine from $3,000 to $50,000 for each unauthorized worker and would establish a minimum period of imprisonment of one year (the maximum period under current law is six months).

See here for more.

Now, here's the Republican position on illegal immigration:

1. The immigrants came here illegally.

2. Even though they came here illegally they should be allowed to stay, although we'll talk a good game on the issue and pretend that we care.

3. Corporations should be able to freely employ and exploit the illegal immigrants in order to increase their profits and destroy unions.

4. US citizens should provide corporate welfare to those very same companies with their taxpayer dollars.

5. Republican politicians should continue taking large sums of money from the same companies that employ the most illegal immigrants.

6. Cynically manipulate people who really DO care about illegal immigration but do absolutely nothing about it because it will hurt the GOP's business allies.

7.  Create a permanent underclass in America that has no rights but that is crucial to industry, agriculture, the service sector, etc., etc.

That is why I don't trust the GOP (jiacinto - 10/12/2007 7:36:25 PM)
position either. I know that Stewart et al are doing this to play upon the racist sympathy of those in Prince William County who are uncomfortable with the county's changing demographics. When I later read in the Post that they don't have the money to fund it, I realized that it was all for political points.

Exactly. (Lowell - 10/12/2007 7:40:48 PM)

So, Lowell, do you think they'll pass it (pol - 10/12/2007 10:43:16 PM)
even if they don't have the funding?  Perhaps pass it, then repeal it later?

Obey the Rules (Citizen Tom - 10/12/2007 11:00:47 PM)
There are too many accusations flying around on this issue and not enough common sense. The simple fact is that neither political party is doing the people of this nation a favor on the immigration issue.  Both parties are under the influence of well-heeled special interests that want the cheap labor.

The basic problem is how fast we can absorb new immigrants.  Immigration is not necessarily a bad thing.  Ideally, however, the vast majority of immigrants should speak English and bring skills we need.  Most of the people coming here, however are unskilled and do not speak English.

Our democracy and the future of our nation depends upon a large, well educated, middle class.  At the current rate of immigration, these poor, uneducated immigrants will balkanize our nation into two distinct groups:  Spanish-speaking poor and English-speaking middle class.  Why anyone rational person would desire such a situation is beyond me? It is a recipe for instablity and civil war.

Corey Stewart has raised the profile of issue.  He may be grandstanding, but I don't think he pretends the Prince William Board of County Supervisors can solve the immigration issue on its own.  At best, Stewart will encourage illegal immigrants to stop coming to Prince William County.  Perhaps he will encourage a few to leave. However, given the current mess, that is progress.
