Larry Craig and His "Wide Stance" to Stay in Senate

This is almost beyond belief and certainly beyond parody:

Arousing the ire of his Republican colleagues, embattled Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, again reneged on a pledge to resign from the Senate, announcing Thursday afternoon that despite a judge's refusal to allow him to withdraw his guilty plea, he would remain in the Senate. A member of the Senate Republican leadership immediately denounced Craig's decision, calling the situation "embarrassing" and suggesting that Craig's change of mind was dishonorable.

But I guess if David "DC Madam" Vitter can stay there, why not Larry "Wide Stance" Craig?  "Family values" party indeed.

Dishonorable! (spotter - 10/4/2007 6:59:00 PM)
So it's the refusal to quit that's dishonorable, not the rest of it.  Unbelievable.  So much for "At least Republicans resign."
There's an old song about this: "How can we miss you if you won't go away?"

Larry Craig

Thank you, Mr. Craig (Kindler - 10/4/2007 9:20:12 PM)
George Bush did his best to run the Republican party into the ground, but he needs help to finish the job and leave his party in COMPLETE shambles.

So here comes Larry Craig, just in time...

He's happy but definitely not gay! :) (Lowell - 10/4/2007 9:37:35 PM)

Senator Craig was convicted of a misdemeanor charge.  The act that he is guilty of certainly does not impair his ability to continue on as a Senator.  And the activity itself is unrelated to his job as a Senator.  I agree with Senator Arlen Spector on this one as he was quoted in the NY Times:
"Senator Craig is entitled to make his decision and I respect it," Mr. Specter said. "Disorderly conduct is not moral turpitude, and it is no basis for leaving the Senate."

I don't think his decision is shocking.  After some time outside of the emotion of the initial event, he had time to think rationally about the whole situation.  So, is it shocking that after considering this one incident in the perspective of his long service, he decided not to resign?

His actions underline Republican hypocrisy on "family values."  And we have been over that.  I love that he has decided to stay and defy those contemptible Republican Senators who called for his resignation.  And he remains there as a symbol of Republicans' hate mongering and bigotry on the issue of homosexuality.  I believe a more appropriate diary title would be: "Democrats win again; Senator Larry Craig decides to stick around."

One final thing, has there been any discussion about how Minneapolis police were just hanging out in the restroom waiting to catch someone for lewd conduct?  Perhaps Minneapolis spends too much money on police if it has the money to pay cops to sit in restrooms to bust misdemeanor offenders.

Leave Larry to Tarry (soccerdem - 10/6/2007 1:42:45 PM)
The longer this man stays, the longer we have available the BUTT of all jokes about the Right's gay bashers.

As for his wide stance, note that it allows more room for a croucher at his feet.

He gives new meaning to the phrase "We'll leave no kids behind" and "I promise to withdraw."

He needs to stay as the perfect continuous reminder of the Right's hypocricy and double standards.  Everytime we see him we should think of him tapping his feet for the guy on HIS right, and thank heaven for this incident.  They can say all over TV that he did nothing illegal or immoral, but we and the general public know better.
