Why Immigrants Come Here for Jobs

The unemployment rate in northern Virginia is at 2.3%, with 5% normally considered "full employment."  That's why NOVA is pulling in immigrants -- documented and undocumented -- in large numbers.  It's pretty simple, actually.

These Numbers Are Deceptive (Matt H - 10/4/2007 2:33:01 PM)
Though I am venturing into an arena separate from the immigration debate, the numbers are deceptive and our politicians (and I'm thinking about Kerry in '04) don't know how to properly manipulate them.

Jobs should be measured in a qualitative fashion, not a quantitative one.  Who cares about jobs that have no benefits, hopes of stable continued employment that require the worker to work a second job just to cover the costs of transportation to the first job?  We could all have four terrible jobs, and have a negative unemployment rate, but what would that show?

The measure of our economy should be marked by pay and benefits of our jobs.

Increased wages above real inflation will signal true shortage. (loboforestal - 10/4/2007 3:06:34 PM)
We need to see a sustained increase in real median wages to say that the job situation is really good.  Not seeing it.

Good points (Lowell - 10/4/2007 3:22:02 PM)
I'd say we need to look at both quantitative and qualitative factors.

Jobless rate is still too high. (loboforestal - 10/4/2007 3:03:35 PM)
I'd still like to see Larry Craig unemployed.  2.299999% rate sounds better to me.
