Scary Jerry...

This is a pesonal little story about the Vienna Halloween Parade.

I decided to walk with the Fairfax Democratic Committee and Creigh Deeds and had a fun time, thanks to the amazing organizational efforts of the Fairfax Dems--and especially Sue Langley.  At a certain point, I wandered with my camera and found myself a few feet away (admitedly, while wearing a Tim Kaine tee shirt) from Jerry Kilgore.  So, I started taking his picture--just as I do with almost every other candidate.  Unfortunately, as soon as I took one photo, Kilgore supporters started covering him with signs.  So, the only photo I got was what I call "Scary Jerry."

Kilgore looks like he's hiding something.  I suppose he was hiding himself from the little brunette in the Kaine teeshirt and poodle skirt.  I hate to say it, but how was I so terrifying...unless Jerry had something to hide?

After this, I tried to approach Mr. Kilgore, but I found myself rebuffed by supporters who were determined that I not meet him.  Sadly, if I had had the chance to meet the candidate, I would have offered him the chance for a better photo opportunity--and to allow him better opportunity to impress me in of his merits as a candidate (heck, I would have been polite, after all, we have common kin in SW VA--and I do have an open mind).  But that would not happen.

In contrast, I also walked in the parade with Creigh Deeds (candidate for Attorney General).  Creigh had no problem going up and meeting anyone on the parade route. Creigh even went up to folks with his opponents' stickers--and engaged them--so much so that almost everyone Creigh spoke to promised to vote for him.  As I was photographing Creigh I shot him a rather skeptical look when he took on a large group of Republicans.  Creigh looked at me, smiled and said "Mary, there is no such thing as a bad voter.  Anyone is good in my book, because these are the people I want to serve and help--regardless of party."

So, a tale of two candidates.  It sealed two things for me.  I know I won't vote for Jerry Kilgore--since he never gave me the chance.  I also know I will vote for Creigh Deeds--since he impressed me that he will give every Virginian the chance (and oh yeah, Creigh's legislative record is also a good confirmation of my impressions this evening).
