"Hispanics Rising": GOP Beware

This should be a wakeup call to Republicans to stop their immigrant bashing, but it probably won't be. If not, the following is what the electoral vote map may very well look like in 2008 (you need 270 to be elected president):

P.S. I would say that Ohio is competitive right now, as are New Hampshire, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, West Virginia and possibly Virginia.  Then, in a few more years, add Texas to the Democratic column, and lock in Democratic control of the White House for a generation to come.

Did you forget "illegal"? (Brian Kirwin - 9/21/2007 2:49:15 PM)
Nice spin, Lowell, but Republicans are talking about ILLEGAL immigration.

Will illegal immigrants be voting in 2008?

Yeah, you keep believing this is "spin" (Lowell - 9/21/2007 2:54:11 PM)
and go the way of the California Republican Party after Pete Wilson.  Fine with me! :)

Also, I'd note that Hispanics who are abandoning (Lowell - 9/21/2007 2:55:32 PM)
the Republican Party in droves apparently aren't picking up on the "illegal"/"legal" distinction.  And yes, there are millions more LEGAL Hispanic voters than in 2000 or 2004.

Latinos (Just Saying - 9/21/2007 9:40:32 PM)
Don't see the distinction. They understand perfectly what's going on.

Yes (Glant - 9/22/2007 11:20:46 AM)
Many Hispanics realize that if there is a crackdown on hiring of "illegal" immigrants, it will be much harder for any Hispanic to find work.  Some employers will be unwilling to take a chance that they violate the law by accident.  Others will simply use that as an excuse not to hire anyone with an accent.

No, Republicans talk about Latinos (Hugo Estrada - 9/21/2007 9:53:06 PM)
The "illegal immigration" is just a code word for bigots to express their racists sentiments.

Follow the discourse, and you will see how the complaints quickly move from "illegality" to complaining about cultural behavior, such as speaking Spanish.

Bill Howell slipped the other day (Lowell - 9/22/2007 8:56:12 AM)
and let his true feelings out.  See here and especially here for more.  Also, please note that Howell NEVER mentioned the word "illegal," just that "the state's newest residents might not be accustomed to the 'shared values we have in Virginia'" and also that they tend to -- gasp! - vote Democratic!

By the way, if you can vote, that means you're legal.  Which means that Howell was actually attacking LEGAL immigrants and specifically NOT mentioning "illegal" immigrants.  Verrrry interesting.

New Hampshire (not mark sickles - 9/22/2007 10:50:07 PM)
It may only have 4 electoral votes, but after what the Granite State did to the GOP last year, anyone who thinks that those 4 electoral votes won't be in the D column next year is crazy.

And yes, by the way, Ohio, Missouri, and Virginia may certainly be competitive in the presidential, though the latter two much less likely to go blue if Hillary is the nominee.  West Virginia will stay in the GOP column regardless of the Dem nominee, with the possible exception of Edwards.
