Appalachian Powered Hypocrisy

The most sickening hypocrisy that has come out from the SWVA Republican delegation over the past two years is their talk about being against the nearly 30% electric rate increase APCO almost pushed through, and that the State Corporation Commission only recently got a handle on. The massive increase was financially devestating for low-income families and seniors on fixed incomes throughout Southwest Virginia, ultimately provoking more than 26,000 complaints.

Raising Kaine had phenomenal and very revealing coverage of the influence Dominion Power and APCO had over the legislative process surrounding the 2007 Electric Utility Capped Rate Increase Bill (HB3068). The press followed through too, with a series of stories illuminating the potential for higher electric rates. They acted, quite appropriately, like a watchdog for Virginian consumers. If our legislators had read the stories, and not been too busy counting their money from APCO and Dominion, they might have noted the looming danger to consumers. In hindsight, it's almost as though the media had a crystal ball.
Washington Post (3/15/2007)

"This current bill is going to guarantee consumers nothing but high prices," said Irene Leech, president of the Virginia Citizens Consumer Council. "We will have neither effective regulation nor competition to keep prices reasonable."

Virginia Pilot (2/7/2007)

"Opponents predict the measure could lead to < b>higher residential electric rates"

Roanoke Times (2/19/2007)

"It's a sure bet that electric bills... are going to be much higher"

I find it difficult to understand how, after supporting a measure that allowed electric companies more leeway in raising their rates, Southwest Virginia Republicans could then get upset when they do. Don't buy this hypocrisy on their part, not when they're lining their pockets with donations from the big power companies. What price did it take to sell out their constituents and allow higher electric rates? What price did APCO have to pay to buy the favor, and vote, of Southwest Virginia Republicans?
Terry Kilgore sold out his constituents for a cool $6,130.
Allen Dudley had a price tag of $3700.

"Electric" Bill Carrico sold out his constituents for a slim $3,150

Dave Nutter didn't think twice, taking $2,086 dollars from AEP.

Anne Crockett-Stark , the cheapest, sold out for only $1,000.

Pathetic on the part of our legislators, because they were too afraid to stand up for a truly comprehensive electric utility solution for our state. Since the Republican "Bobblehead Bunch" were too afraid to stand up for Southwest Virginia, it's time to elect a new slate of Democratic leaders unafraid to stand up for the values of Southwest Virginia. Those of you that can volunteer the time, please do; Those of you that can financially contribute to our slate of candidates, please do; Those of you who don't have time for either due to work or family, I ask only that you cast a vote for new leadership on November 6th. For Jerry Taylor, Susie Garner, Bill Thomas, Peggy Frank, Eric Ferguson, Roscoe Reynolds, and Mike Breiner...

It's time for true leadership to move Southwest Virginia forward!
