I know how much some of you guys like listening to what the political "insiders" think, but the latest National Journal has a good one: "Which Democratic presidential contender would be the strongest general election candidate?" and "Which Republican presidential contender would be the strongest general election candidate?"  The results:

*Hillary Clinton is seen as the strongest general election candidate for the Democrats by 55% of Democratic insiders and 52% of Republican insiders.

*Barack Obama comes in second, with 21% of Democratic insiders and 18% of Republicans saying that he'd be the strongest general election candidate for the Democrats.

*John Edwards trails at 11% among Democratic insiders and 18% among Republican insiders.  Everyone else is in single digits.

*Rudy Giuliani is seen as the strongest Republican general election candidate by 37% of both Democratic and Republican insiders.

*Mitt Romney is seen as second strongest by both Democratic (28%) and Republican (32%) insiders.

*Fred Thompson completely bombs among Republican insiders, with just 9% saying he'd be the strongest general election candidate.  Apparently, the rollout of his campaign hasn't impressed the Republican insiders.

*John McCain is seen as strongest by 11% of Democrats and 18% of Republican insiders.

In sum, the "insiders" believe by a wide margin that Hillary Clinton would be the strongest general election candidate for Democrats.  They believe that Rudy Giuliani would be the strongest Republican, but not by a wide margin.  Please feel free to discuss.

The way it works in Soapblox is that there's a community policing system.  People can "troll rate" comments, and if enough people do, they "disappear" unless you are a trusted user.  That's what happened to several of your comments, they were troll rated by the community.

might be a tad harsh (loboforestal - 9/14/2007 2:51:09 PM)
If you can throttle back the controls, that'd be good.  I think you should have a higher threshold to mute somebody.

COMMENT HIDDEN (MohawkOV1D - 9/14/2007 3:19:14 PM)

It's standard to have community ratings (Lowell - 9/14/2007 3:28:05 PM)
in community blogs.  I'm not sure what the problem is, exactly.  Also, it doesn't "mute" anybody; they can still post comments and diaries, but their "troll rated" comments are hidden from non-trusted users.

Actually, a lot of blogs have "moderation" turned on (Lowell - 9/14/2007 3:29:53 PM)
...so comments can ONLY be posted with the blog's approval.  SoapBlox doesn't work that way.

through a glass, snarkly (loboforestal - 9/14/2007 4:29:30 PM)
oops.

Okay. I thought the "hidden comment" was soapblox system processed, not him being flip.

now i get it.

sorry.

Two words (Afton Dem - 9/14/2007 2:48:24 PM)
John.  Kerry.

Not sure what you mean. (Lowell - 9/14/2007 2:51:10 PM)
Did the "insiders" think that John Kerry would be the strongest candidate against Bush?  As far as I can tell, it was the good people of Iowa and New Hampshire who chose Kerry over Howard Dean, John Edwards and Wes Clark....

The former (Afton Dem - 9/14/2007 2:52:17 PM)
John Kerry was the choice of Democratic Washington insiders from start to finish, and the biggest justification was that he would be the most electable in a general election.

This is what you should be talking about (Afton Dem - 9/14/2007 2:51:10 PM)
A survey of Washingtonians?  Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

This was exciting stuff.  I would have liked to have seen some discussion from you about this, Lowell.

To each their own (Lowell - 9/14/2007 2:56:24 PM)
I think that "insiders" like Steve Jarding have interesting perspectives on things.  I also like hearing the view of non-"insiders."  Feel free to post a diary on anything you see that you find interesting.  That's why this is a community blog.

Clinton and women (personwho - 9/14/2007 8:49:13 PM)
Interesting. I only know 2 women who are Clinton supporters and they both are Washington insiders to some extent (a lobbyist and someone who works for the feds.) Edwards, Obama and even Biden have more support than her among women I know.
