Jerry Falwell's Son: "I am going to do what my daddy told me"

According to this article, it looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in the Falwell family:

The son of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, whose Moral Majority helped reshape the national political landscape, vowed Tuesday to pick up where his father left off and help change public policy in Virginia and in Washington.

Jonathan Falwell's first mission: Elect more social conservatives to the Virginia General Assembly.

That's Falwell's right to do, of course, and I wish him well.  But it's also everyone else's right to fight back against Falwell's extreme right-wing social policy agenda.  Fortunately, people who oppose that agenda -- banning abortion, reinterpreting the constitution to destroy separation of church and state, discriminating against gays and lesbians, etc.) - are fighting back, as a rapidly changing Virginia becomes a central front in the so-called "culture wars":

Jessica Bearden, deputy director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, said Virginia could be one of the first states to outlaw abortion if the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

"This is really crunch time for pro-choice voters," Bearden said. "It's time for us to vote our values and say, 'We are not going to stand for the General Assembly telling our doctors how they can treat us.' "

The bottom line: since Jonathan Falwell is "going to do what my daddy told me," it's time for the rest of us to do what OUR mommies and daddies told us -- be tolerant of other people, stand up for our rights,  fight for what we believe in.  Over the next 50+ days, that's exactly what we all need to be doing here in Virginia.  It's "crunch time."

The family that hates together, stays together.

One of the greater shames of Virginia is that our state provides such fertile ground for so many mean-minded bigots. What other state can claim Falwells, and Robertsons, and Arlington Groups, and on and on and on?

We can't easily make them all vanish back into the smoking pits from which they came. But we can elect decent officials and legislators who won't actively curry their favor and support their aims.

In other words: Vote Democratic!

"Hatred is NOT a family value" (Lowell - 9/12/2007 8:58:21 AM)
Maybe someone should send one of those bumper stickers to Jonathan Falwell?

Wish Falwell well? Tongue in cheek I presume. (Dianne - 9/12/2007 9:05:16 AM)
If Falwell wants to replicate his father's corrupt (remember his church bond scandal), malevolent (gays and liberals caused 9/11) and  vengeful ways, my wish for him is total failure.

First, let me post some excerpts from the article:

... Falwell said Virginia pastors need to refocus their efforts on getting their congregants out to vote this fall for legislative candidates who "believe the Bible is the truth."

... the racially diverse group of pastors was given instructions for registering voters. The pastors also were urged to speak from the pulpit to get voters to the polls.

The Family Foundation's effort comes a year after the group successfully campaigned for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions in Virginia. The measure was approved by 57 percent of voters.

...the Family Foundation, which distributes tens of thousands of voter guides ranking candidates by their stance on key issues.

The Family Foundation of Virginia and Falwell are against No Fault Divorce, contraception (want to defund Planned Parenthood), public education, and on and on.  We all know what they stand for and it is unethical, vicious, and irreligious.  And they don't even blink an eye when they are working to take away your constitutional rights.

There is another diary posted here on conservastism's failure and that we should be focusing on the ideology instead of the person (Bush).  Well what do you know -- here is Falwell touting the "C" word and willing to use that to help elect Republicans.  I agree with the author, debunk the myth that conservatism is good for Virginia.  Use whatever examples you can think of where conservatism has failed....otherwise, Falwell and his pastors will be leading us into another Republican General Assembly and he'll be conducting Thomas Road Baptist Church services at the State Capitol Building!

local politics (martha - 9/12/2007 3:18:30 PM)
You guys up there in NOVA and in Richmond and Tidewater don't have a clue how awful it is to live here in Lynchburg with Jerry Jr. and Jonanthon now carrying on their dad's legacy. The latest push is to register Liberty U students locally so that they can vote in local elections ( council/HOD/State senate). It's legal. If a student lives off campus and claims residency there is NOTHING that we can do.

Just this summer a professor at LU, Darrin Gerdes, was appointed to the school board while two Dem-leaning council members were out of town on family business. They THOUGHT there was a gentleman's agreement to WAIT until the next meeting to approve the appointment BUT the conservative leaning council members out numbered the others and the appointment went ahead.

The man who was replaced was a long time public school educator and principal.A well respected member of the board and vice-chair. There was an enormous uproar which did NO good.

Dr. Gerdes character and experience are in question but to no avail. We are all watching his votes.

These are the tactics they use. Very scary.

We value the work and efforts of Del. Shannon Valentine. The fact that she has no opponent this election cycle is a testament to her efforts and hard work but all that could change next go around if the "sons' have their way!

My heart goes out to you.... (Dianne - 9/12/2007 5:13:59 PM)
I've lived in places like that (Lynchburg) and frankly I managed to get out.

Their tactics scary you say?  They will stoop as low as they can to get control of anything, tell you how to run your life, degrade you if you aren't like them, and try to convert you to their "religion".  Good luck .... you need it.

But isn't it great about Del. Valentine?

yes she is (martha - 9/12/2007 5:41:47 PM)
She is fair. I don't agree w/ every position she takes but she works very hard!
