Clinton, Obama Coming to Charlottesville

It looks like Charlottesville is the place to be if you're a Democratic presidential candidate looking for money from Virginia.

Apparently, Illinois Senator Barack Obama's camp has decided it doesn't want to cede the fundraising rich soil of Albemarle County and Charlottesville to Obama's biggest rival for the Democratic presidential nomination.  With New York Senator Hillary Clinton coming for a Paramount fundraiser September 23, Obama will also appear for a Charlottesville event slated for October 29, The Daily Progress first reported last week.

Likely their stops are less about winning primary votes than about filling war-chests with local cash. After all, Virginia's February 12 primary, while just a week after Super Tuesday, has been made even less important this go around by states like Florida and Michigan moving up their primaries to January.

Also, according to c-ville, "John Grisham will host Clinton's event" while "Obama hasn't announced yet who will help him draw in the thousand-dollar-hors-d'oeuvre crowd."

I just hope that whoever the Democratic nominee is in 2008 competes hard for Virginia and doesn't concede it as Democrats have many times in the past.  In the meantime, Charlottesville is the place to be for "thousand-dollar-hors-d'ouevre's with the candidates.

Supporting Virginia's November 2007 elections (edgery - 9/11/2007 8:59:37 PM)
I think it's great when our state receives attention from the national candidates.  And I'm sure there will be plenty of folks attending the Clinton and Obama fundraisers and shelling out the money to hobnob with the rich, famous and politicos in attendance.

I had the opportunity to attend a very different fundraiser in Northern Virginia a few weeks ago. The headliner was also a national Presidential candidate, John Edwards. The admission price was a mere $50 to $100 and the beneficiary of the monies raised was not Edwards but the Democratic candidates for our House of Delegates.

John Edwards took time out of his busy campaigning schedule that day not to raise money for his own coffers (though he could use some) but because he strongly supports our effort here in Virginia to take back the state legislature.

While Edwards is the candidate I support for the Presidency, I'd probably pony up some money to see Obama or Clinton IF they showed the same commitment to our state's success in November 2007 as Edwards.
