NLS: Tom Davis Delaying Decision?

Not Larry Sabato reports that sources close to Rep. Davis say he may be getting cold feet about running for Senate next year, and could wait til after this November's elections on a decision. Is this really surprising?

If Mark Warner runs, Tom Davis would have no chance of being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008. Plus, when Chap Peterson beats Mrs. Davis for her State Senate seat in 2 months, Tom's political stock will plummet. Perhaps he realizes how lucky he is to hold a seat in Congress in an increasingly blue district. But you have to wonder...if Davis runs for re-election, do any of the Democrats rumored to be eyeing the seat get cold feet?

[Update by Lowell: The Hill reports on Republicans who might run if Tom Davis departs.  They include State Sen. Jay O'Brien, Del. Tim Hugo, Prince William County Board Chairman Corey Stewart, and U.S. Maritime Administrator Sean Connaughton.  Two others say they're not interested - Del. Dave Albo ("I just don't want to be a full-time politician") and State Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis ("I have no intention of ever running for the U.S. Congress").]

Treason (The Grey Havens - 9/5/2007 2:07:44 AM)
Tom Davis was the first to defame as traitors anyone who dared question the Bush Administration in the run up to war.

That in itself is unforgivable treason.

Congressmen are supposed to take an oath to defend the Constitution, that includes the First Amendment.

Davis is a radical in moderate clothing.

Not that I don'tbelieve you (kestrel9000 - 9/5/2007 8:39:11 AM)

Good question about cold feet (Eric - 9/5/2007 9:38:41 AM)
If these other candidates were sitting out last time because they didn't want to lose, then expect the same in 08.  The 11th is turning bluer but probably not enough for an easy upset of a long term incumbent - the sort of conditions that'll make most continue to wait for Davis to just go away on his own.

Which is all fine from my perspective - I'd love to see someone like Andy Hurst run again while the cold foot crew sits out hoping for any easy win next time.  While his odds are still long, they'd be better than last time and better than trying to win a primary against established candidates.

Tim Hugo? You've Got to be Kidding (Mule - 9/5/2007 11:18:10 AM)
It's hard to believe that the Republicans would be so stupid as to nominate Tim Hugo to replace Davis, in the event that Davis does not seek re-election to his current congressional seat.  You can count that if Hugo throws his hat into the ring, he will become the target of unrelenting ethics scrutiny--and deservedly so.  The guy has a checkered past, to say the least, beginning with his stint as chief of staff to the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Bud Shuster, who was reprimanded by the Republican-controlled House Ethics Committee, and continuing with his professional association with convicted lobbyist Ann Eppard. Hugo would be a gift to the Democrats in 2008.

Corey Stewart??? Thanks for my laugh of the day. (Barbara - 9/5/2007 12:09:16 PM)
Every time I see that Honda commerical featuring "Mr. Opportunity"  I think of him.  I was going to suggest he use it as his campaign slogan.  He is an opportunist from the word go.  And go is what I'd love to see him do from Prince William County, but certainly not to the US Congress.

I've been thinking that Davis might wait until after the Nov. elections to better guage his chances.  Like it or not, he's no dummy; if I'm not mistaken, he has never lost an election and I'm sure he realizes he could never beat Warner.  No way he's willing to give up his current seat.  I'm guessing he's waiting to see what Warner does.
